LESS PAINFUL AND FASTER RECOVERY SPAY
Wellness Veterinary is excited to introduce a new and less invasive method for spaying female dogs. Many surgeries in humans are performed laparoscopically. Now we can perform this in dogs and cats as well.
How the procedure is done?
Laparoscopic spay is done through 2 or 3 small holes in the abdomen. For comparison, a traditional surgical spay involves a larger incision, that can be up to 3 inches long.
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. After shaving and preparing the laparoscopic area, the abdomen is inflated with carbon dioxide gas. A small camera (endoscope) is inserted through a small hole to the abdomen. Next, the surgical instrument is inserted into the abdomen through a second hole. The ovaries are located and removed from the abdomen through the small holes. After the procedure is completed, the holes are closed. Although usually not necessary, the uterus can also be removed through a third hole in the abdomen.
What are the advantages of laparoscopic spay?
- Small holes in the abdomen are less traumatic to skin and muscles compared with traditional surgery
- The procedure is more precise, using a camera to localize the ovaries and the uterus.
- Less painful
- Faster healing
- No need for overnight hospitalization.
Are there any potential risks or complications?
We require a physical exam prior to the procedure. We are going to discuss all the risks of the procedure during the exam. We also recommend to perform blood work before the procedure to ensure the healthiness of your pet, and to minimize the risk of anesthesia.
As with any other surgery, there is the risk of anesthesia. All the anesthetic medication that we use are safe for healthy pets, and most of them are also used in human medicine. We provide intravenous fluids to all patients while under anesthesia for laparoscopic surgeries.
Other complications are rare but possible, and might include bleeding and trauma to other organs.
